liquor-inthe-front:

Single Woman’s Title = Miss
Married Woman’s Title = Mrs.
Unknown Woman’s Title = Ms.

Married Man’s Title = Mr.
Single Man’s Title = Mr.
Unknown Man’s Title = Mr.

Because a woman only has status if she is married

think about it.
add an apostrophe to Mrs = Mr’s.
think about it.

and then go throw up.

Actually, that’s entirely incorrect.

For men, in the UK and in other English-speaking countries, Master is used for boys under 18, e.g. Master John Smith. When he becomes a man, he gets the title Mister.

The women’s title structure is similarly designed. Miss refers to a girl typically where Mrs (short for Mistress, the female equivalent of Mister, not Mister’s as you suggest) is for a married woman. In the early 20th century however, Ms was re-introduced specifically to give unmarried women a title that wasn’t as insulting as calling an adult woman Miss or an unmarried one Mrs.

Today, Ms is usually used by adult women of married, unmarried, or divorced status and has become a generic term which is safe to use if unsure about her preferred title.

Next time, fact check before you go on the offensive. There are really worthy causes out there which need help and attention but historically inaccurate styles of address isn’t really one of them.

I need this.

my high school principal had this book, and used it to great and terrible effect every assembly. one day, i stole it. hid it away. i thought i had gotten away with it, that nobody had seen me come or go, but the next time i passed by his office he called my name. i stopped. he stopped. he reached into a drawer of his desk and pulled out a second copy

THIS MAN WAS TOO POWERFUL.

So my mom told me a story...

theguilteaparty:

Growing up, my mom and her siblings would make banana bread every week.

Literally every week since the first one of them learned how to make it, they started making banana bread- lo and behold though, they liked it with walnuts and they all knew their dad hated walnuts.

So they made a special loaf of banana bread just for him every week, just for him to eat. Nobody else was allowed to eat it because that was his banana bread, baked especially for him.

So anyways, they did this once a week from middle school up until every last one of them moved out of the house (and considering there was at least 10 years difference from the oldest to the youngest, this was quite some time). So that’s like… 16 years of weekly banana bread. And he always finished it. He, without fail, ate the whole loaf of bread by himself.

That’s approximately 835 loaves of banana bread.

Now

Skip ahead a few years…

and they’re all visiting and baking banana bread and they start making a dad’s bread and their mom comes in, “I don’t think he can handle eating one more slice of banana bread!”

“What are you talking about? He loves banana bread! He had it all the time!”

This is when my grandma, their mom, broke the news that my grandfather loathed banana bread with every fiber of his being. He just adored that his kids loved him enough to make him a special loaf of banana bread every week (and he didn’t have the heart to tell them that he couldn’t stand banana bread) and he was incredibly, utterly upset that my grandma told the kids his big secret.

My grandfather was a loving, patient, gentle man who absolutely hated banana bread but loved his kids so much more and I just wanted to share that with you guys. I think this story is just about the perfect example of the kind of person he was.

I just told my mom this had 1000 notes on it and let me tell you what

She had two responses.

1. Tell them about the mac n cheese

2. Tell me when it hits a million

why do we have butt cheeks i dont understand why did we evolve this way

what use do butt cheeks have

oh my god I HAVE THIS KNOWLEDGE

fun fact: butt-cheeks are one of the things that make us superior to other animals okay note that other apes do not have butt-cheeks

okay don’t quote me on this because I only did sixthform-bio and I’m sure of forgotten loads of stuff but here’s the down-low

back when we were evolving from ape to human, one of the most important things that happened was when our spine started meeting our brains at a sort of 90 degree angle instead of like 45 degrees, which meant that we could straighten up and walk on two legs which was a pretty rad development

except alas oh no our muscles weren’t built to allow us to walk around on two legs because that requires a sort of twisty motion of your hips as opposed to whatever the fuck it is everything else does AND SO ape-people started evolving with longer, narrower waists so that our bodies could twist with every footstep and we could strut along the fashionable catwalk that is neanderthal evolution

but then once this had happened, people realised that we had an advantage over other animals and we would be better at chasing and killing them but we weren’t very good at running

so that’s when we developed the glutenus maximus which is a really badass-sounding name for the muscle in your derriere which helps us to support our spine in an upright position so we don’t get tired, and helps the legs to rotate nicely so that we can run, and has a nice big fat storage around it to help us get energy so that we can run

and that, basically, is the butt-cheek

tl;dr - butt-cheeks were the result of thousands of years of natural selection so that we could run fast and slaughter things

thank you so much for such a fabulous, informative and detailed explanation on the evolution of the butt

i feel enlightened and empowered to know my butt is for such a worthwhile purpose, so thank you

i love this butt science post so much

Rat Empathy

Upworthy carried a story summarizing an experiment demonstrating that rats exhibit empathy. Why do I care about this? Because the graphics showing the experiment on Upworthy made me smile, and smiling is good. Here’s the link in case you want to watch the video embedded in the story.

Some scientists ran an experiment to demonstrate that. Here’s how it worked:

  1. The scientists put a rat in water (which rats hate). Not enough to hurt the rat, but enough to annoy it.
  2. Then they put another rat in a safer, dry area with a door it could open to save the first rat.
image

When the dry rat heard the damp, miserable rat get upset, she came to the rescue.

image

Still not satisfied with the result, the scientists ran a more complex test.

What if you bribe the dry rat with food? Will she ignore it to rescue the wet rat in the next chamber?

Scientists presumed it would be easier for the not-in-peril rat to take the obvious selfless route when it was given only one choice. But what if they gave her a delicious bribe (chocolate cereal) and then let her choose between saving her friend and a buffet?

image

The rats, by a significant margin, still usually saved their friend before getting their delicious bribe. What does that mean?

Rats might care more about each other than things like food, and that prioritization might be encoded in their DNA.

Why should we care about super-thoughtful rats?

It is often argued that humans are inherently selfish — that without guidance, we would all default to killing and stealing and an “every person for themselves” mentality. That we only help others if it helps us. That evolution can’t make us selfless; it’s something we have to force ourselves to do.

But if rats show human-like qualities (they laugh like us, they dream like us, they like to have selfless lovers) like altruism, that means it isn’t a human-learned behavior. It could be encoded in our DNA. It means humans could be empathetic and kind by default.

It also means that rats and humans have more in common than we think.

An adorable rat not spreading the plague and hugging a tiny teddy bear. Much empathy.

lotusflowersfromconcrete:

I hate that mental disorders have turned into a competition. you cant discuss eating habits without someone saying how they survived off green tea for 3 weeks and weighed 4 stone. you can’t discuss your depression because another person has already tried to commit suicide 8 times and theyre only 12. you cant discuss self harm because you punch your leg till it turns purple whilst they slice their arm to the bone. you cant talk about addiction because someone else will talk about facing their crack addiction for 18 years. every god damn time you even come close to wanting to reach out you know theres no point because in other people’s eyes you’re never sick enough. there’s always someone worse off. that’s the problem with attitudes to mental health. this ‘oh suck it up you’re not as bad as me/them’ HAS to stop. you have no idea how much a problem affects a person because, okay it might seem like nothing to you but to them their entire world is breaking down and they just have to wait till they either figure it out on their own, or become so sick that people can’t deny it any more. and by then its usually too late.
