holy shit

I read somewhere that sirens/mermaids sang songs that they heard from sailors on passing ships. I imagine this is what a modern siren would sound like singing this song.

capnpea:

The interesting thing about Glados/HAL 9000 parallels is that

Hal was conceived at a time when artificial intelligence was more of a fictional construct than a practical possibility. Hal is introduced as humanlike because the audience is familiar with and comfortable with humans, but they aren’t familiar with or comfortable with living computers. It’s when he starts acting robotic and calculated that the audience realizes “oh no, he’s a computer” and he becomes threatening.

By the time Glados was conceived, we had become used to computer automated systems. Synthetic voices offering us information is something we encounter in daily life. Glados is introduced as a computerized preprogrammed voice because that’s what the audience is familiar and comfortable with. It’s when she starts acting human and emotional that the audience realizes “oh no, she’s alive” and she becomes threatening.

So I just remembered this from Goblet of Fire:

“Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,

Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,

Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,

Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.”

I reckon this means that the founders are from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland respectively, and so they are literally bringing wizards and witches from all over Great Britain. Also, their colours are the colours associated with each country; red for England, blue for Scotland, yellow for Wales and green for Ireland.

I love this world so so much.

Griffin

image

The griffin’s more likable qualities include nobility, gentleness, and justice. Depicted on ancient stone tombs, griffins are the guardians and protectors of life, and remain loyal in their protection even in the afterlife. Griffins count nobility, vigilance, virtue and strength among their many positive attributes. The griffin is an incredibly strong symbol, and used only when the mightiest gods’ attention needs to be captured, and reserved only when the need is greatest. Misused, or invoked for selfish reasons, the griffin brings about gluttony, vengeance, ferocity, and violence. (source text)

Unicorn

image

Unicorns exist to protect forests from intelligent creatures. They dwell deep within their forests, and shun most creatures, only conferring with fey such as pixies, dryads, and sprites, showing themselves only when they have to save their forests. Unicorns are strongly magical creatures, with most of their abilities coming from their horn. Unicorns are attracted to innocence; particularly young maidens. Some young women have even proven themselves to be capable of taming and riding a unicorn as a mount. Only the foolish, however, consider a unicorn to be a dumb animal. It is an intelligent magical beast with vast mystical powers at its disposal. (source text)

Centaur

image

Centaurs have a tribal social system.  Each tribe is organized into related clans, with each clan holding specific tribal responsibilities.  They take pride in being self-reliant and unburdened by frivolous possessions, but they have a weakness for jewelry. Most centaurs come across as aloof and humorless.  In truth, though rarely wild and carefree, they can be warm and considerate, and do enjoy a good joke or festival.  They will honor any debts to other species, especially life-debts. Centaurs are extremely gifted astrologers and fortune tellers, to the point that many suspect that they possess some magical sense of precognition.  Many centaurs excel at natural magics, and are said to be able to cure or kill anything with access to the proper plants. Genie

image

Jinn (Genie) in Arabic mythology, a supernatural spirit below the level of angels and devils. Ghūl (treacherous spirits of changing shape), ʿifrīt (diabolic, evil spirits), and siʿlā (treacherous spirits of invariable form) constitute classes of jinn. Jinn are beings of flame or air who are capable of assuming human or animal form and are said to dwell in all conceivable inanimate objects—stones, trees, ruins—underneath the earth, in the air, and in fire. They possess the bodily needs of human beings and can even be killed, but they are free from all physical restraints. Jinn delight in punishing humans for any harm done them, intentionally or unintentionally, and are said to be responsible for many diseases and all kinds of accidents; however, those human beings knowing the proper magical procedure can exploit the jinn to their advantage. Gargoyle

image

Gargoyles are used as the evil beings that eat humans but as said before they usually are used to protect places from evil. Its been said that gargoyles can only communicate when either the wind or the rain passes between their mouths. Strangely enough its also been known that gargoyles have the strange ability of water manipulation. Gargoyles are guardians, protectors, and they do no harm to anyone. Gargoyles are often seen as evil doers and often hide in the shadows to do this. Gargoyles have been known to step in the light for someone strongly willing to see them and have been known to bond with anyone who truly believes they are good. A Gargoyle is a creature that comes to life during the night and turns to stone during the day. They are often to be believed by many to be alive and can see through their stone exterior. Those who truly have respect for such a creature tend to bow their heads in respect and the creature often will return the respect. (Source Text)

Kitsune

image

Kitsune is the Japanese word for fox. Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore; in English, kitsune refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. According to Yōkai folklore, all foxes have the ability to shape shift into women. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives. Kitsune are believed to possess superior intelligence, long life, and magical powers. They are a type of yōkai, or spiritual entity, and the word kitsune is often translated as fox spirit. However, this does not mean that kitsune are ghosts, nor that they are fundamentally different from regular foxes. Because the word spirit is used to reflect a state of knowledge or enlightenment, all long-lived foxes gain supernatural abilities. (Source text)

Werewolf

image

Like real wolves, werewolves can live alone for many years, yet the instinct for a pack often leads them away from their secretive lifestyle, into revealing their nature to a priest or close associate, or converting another to werewolfry for companionship. This is when the otherwise cagey werewolf opens himself to detection! Werewolf packs cause immense destruction. A pack consists of one werewolf who became a werewolf through sorcery, birth, or curse - in other words, his is the original tainted blood. This werewolf is called the Alpha werewolf. The remaining werewolves in the pack are called Beta werewolves because they became werewolves through the bite of the Alpha and carry the Alpha’s tainted blood. (source text)

Satyr

image

A Satyr or Faun are intelligent creatures that are found in the wild places of the world. They indulge in food and drink and romance. A satyr is a horned man with the legs and feet of a goat. The hair that grows on these creatures is usually chestnut brown. The hooves tend to be jet black in colour. Satyrs are mischievous by nature and like to play tricks on others. They have a natural talent for music; they often carry Pan Pipes to play their magical tunes on them. (source text)

Dragon

image

Arrogance, selfishness and a sense of superiority and/or invulnerability. Vanity and great attention to appearances, though not necessarily physical. Defensive and territorial, preferring the company of other creatures to another dragon. Deference and even voluntary servitude to great wisdom, purity, power, or beauty. Curiosity about smaller, more delicate creatures such as men, to the point of obsession. A dragon is often seen as a messenger of divine powers or enforcer of the law of the gods. Mastery of arcane knowledge, such as alchemy and forms of sorcery or magical lore. A dragon tends to either make a snap decision - or else spend hours, days, or even years laboring over an idea, with little middle ground between the extremes. (source text)

Mermaid

image

Mermaids have psychic empathy, but have emotional independence and detachment; they have no need to bond with others.  Mermaids are also known to possibly have telekinesis, mesmerism, and/or clairvoyance. Mermaids extend their auras through other people. This allows them to sense the an other person’s feelings as if those feelings are occurring within their own bodies.  In spite of their profound empathy and capacity to join with others from within, mermaids feel detached from other people no matter how strong the relationship or how involved they are with others. They feel they are observing life from a distance. At the same time, they do not feel alienation or isolation. They are content and enjoy being independent. (source text)

Manticore

image

By all accounts, to encounter a manticore meant certain death. Folklore credits it with the ability to devour a man whole, bones, clothes, weapons and all, leaving no trace behind. As a result, in certain regions, when individuals disappeared without a trace, people considered it proof of manticore existence…with the unfortunate lost ones presumably eaten whole. The manticore moved swiftly and with great power, killing its prey with poison spikes shot like arrows from its tail, with its scorpion-like sting, or with its dreadful teeth.  It was known as a cruel creature, deadly and dangerous, a born hunter that hungered after men above all else. Not surprisingly, people held this beast as a symbol of ill omen and tyranny, or even of the devil, so it never became popular in heraldry. (source text)

Harpy

image

In Greek mythology and Roman mythology, a harpy was a female monster in the form of a bird with a human face. They steal food from their victims while they are eating and carry evildoers (especially those who have killed their family) to the Erinyes. They seem originally to have been wind spirits. Their name means “snatchers”.  In one form they were agents of punishment who abducted people and tortured them on their way to Tartarus. They were vicious, cruel and violent. They lived on the islands of the Strophades. They were usually seen as the personifications of the destructive nature of wind. (source text)

Sphinx

image

Sphinx, a mythological creature with a lion’s body and a human head, an important image in Egyptian and Greek art and legend. The winged sphinx of Boeotian Thebes, the most famous in legend, was said to have terrorized the people by demanding the answer to a riddle taught her by the Muses—What is it that has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?—and devouring a man each time the riddle was answered incorrectly. Eventually Oedipus gave the proper answer: man, who crawls on all fours in infancy, walks on two feet when grown, and leans on a staff in old age. The sphinx thereupon killed herself. From this tale apparently grew the legend that the sphinx was omniscient, and even today the wisdom of the sphinx is proverbial. (source text)

Elven

image

Elves are renowned for their grace and mastery of magic and weapons such as the sword and bow. Becoming physically mature by the age of 25 and emotionally mature at around 125, they are also famously long-lived, capable of living more than half a millennium and remaining physically youthful. Possessed of innate beauty and easy gracefulness, they are viewed as both wondrous and haughty by other races; however, their natural detachment is seen by some as introversion or xenophobia (source text). Elves from Tolkien’s writings harbor knowledge and share a good amount of it. They are the ones that taught Ents language.

Fae

image

Fae is generally a people person. If you are friends with a Fae, chances are excellent they are the person you think always gets you. They can be the most understanding and sympathetic person you know and yet when they let their guard down, they can have the tendency to be a tad emotional. They have the ability to make people feel happy. They aren’t the most popular kid on the block, but everyone likes them. And given the chance, they can be a wonderful leader. While their personality makes them come off as someone you’d never have to fear, in truth, their ability to read people and subtly control someone’s emotions can be one of the most frightening powers of all. Their ability to convince people to change their minds and control their moods is a valuable gift that can bring out the best in others, but it can also be misused and viewed as conniving. Gnome

image

Gnomes believe that pushing a child into a particular interest or vocation may be damaging to the child’s nature causing unhappy or introverted children. Gnomes are encouraged to explore all of their interests as they come. Gnomes are blessed with ever expanding imaginations. They seek to improve their world without bringing it harm through the use of mechanical inventions and alchemy. Gnome homes and villages are often littered with peculiar new creations and unfinished projects. Courtship comprises a series of practical jokes with the intended being the target. Gnomes can perform the spell-like abilities of dancing lights, ghost sound and prestidigitation. These skills are taught in early childhood and play a large role in both childhood and adult games. Gnome children are competitive in the use of these powers. Practical jokes are perceived as contests of wit and skill. Gnomes are naturally friendly, highly social and fun loving people. (source text)

Allow me to introduce you to the Red-eyed Crocodile Skink.
Since these guys were recently discovered (mid to late nineties), there isn’t a whole lot that is known about them, but I’ll share a few facts with you here.

  • These guys can grow up to ten inches in length, though the average is more like seven.
  • They’re pretty shy and choose to play dead as their defense mechanism.
  • Other than geckos, these guys are one of the only lizards that vocalize. Their sound is described as a barking noise when they’re in distress
  • Average lifespan is listed at around 6 years
